Why did Chappelle Rowan tell the audience at the MTV Video Music Awards: "Shut your mouth"

Chapel Rowan She was expected to appear at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, but not in the way you might expect.

Before taking the stage at UBS Arena in New York on Sept. 11, the “Good Luck Baby!” singer had a heated red carpet showdown. (Click here to see all the celebrities who arrived at the event.)

As seen in video footage circulating on social media, Chappelle — with her back facing photographers — was in the middle of adjusting her Y/Project dress when she heard someone in the crowd yell, “Shut up, you motherfucker!”

The 26-year-old quickly turned around and shouted:You Shut up you damn thing!”

After several cheers from the audience, Chappelle continued to silence the troublemaker. Then she added, wagging her finger sternly, “No. Not me, you son of a bitch.”

Indeed, Chappelle—who has four MTV Video Music Awards nominations, including Best New Artist and Best Trending Video for her song “Hot to Go!”—isn’t afraid to hit back. Last month, she criticized her “arrogant” fans for crossing personal boundaries.
