What You Need to Know About Mercury Retrograde

It’s starting to feel a lot like Mercury retrograde season. Yes, again.

For those of us who don’t check our horoscope religiously, this is the period that occurs several times a year where Earth overtakes Mercury in its orbit and appears to move in the opposite direction and generally throws things into disarray.

“During Mercury retrograde, the planet of communications appears to move backward in the sky,” according to the famous astronomer. Alice Kelly “This optical illusion occurs because Mercury is passing very quickly in front of us in its orbit,” E! News explained.

And since Mercury is the planet of communication, “astrologically, Mercury rules expression, technology, travel, and contracts,” noted Kelly, author of the upcoming book All This Magic: 365 Meditations on Astrology, Tarot, and ManifestationSo, during this weeks-long phase, she said, “these areas can go a little crazy.” (Fun fact: In Roman mythology, Mercury was the messenger of the gods.)

However, there is no need to commit to weeks of bed rot just yet.

“Not all Mercury retrogrades are created equal,” Kelly stressed, “and the impact can vary depending on the sign Mercury is in retrograde and how it interacts with other planets.”
