The Mole gets a second season on Netflix, and a new host is revealed
The waiting time is over! After a year-long hiatus, Netflix has finally confirmed the second season of the series the mole. Technically, this is the seventh season of the series, but it’s the second season if you only count the Netflix version. Not only will we be getting a brand new season, but we’re also getting a brand new host, Ari Shapiro!
New season, new host
For those of us who spend a lot of time in the car listening to NPR, you’ll recognize Ari’s name but probably not his face. He’s one of the hosts of NPR Considered, but this is his first time entering the world of reality TV. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he talked about what fans can expect from Season 7 of The Mole and his surprising history with the show.
Ari continues the tradition of The Mole by bringing a famous journalist into the host’s shoes, but he’s also a huge fan of the show. He highlighted the teamwork, puzzles and the fact that the show is not “unnecessarily harsh” on its competitors. Back in the early 2000s, he actually auditioned to be part of the second season of The Mole when it was on ABC and hosted by Anderson Cooper.
Sadly, Ari didn’t get a callback when he auditioned to be a contestant all those years ago. But, two decades later, he’s hosting everything on Netflix. This is very creative.
When teasing what to expect from Season 2, Ari said that each episode feels like a “blockbuster movie,” with a tremendous amount of thought put into each mission. Additionally, he described the cast of 12 as incredibly diverse with a range of “ages, body types and backgrounds.” He also teased that there was a familiar face in the cast.
“I was excited to see a group member that I recognized, and I’m not going to say anything more than that, but it was exciting to have that person there,” Ari revealed.
Who could it be? Ari has clearly mastered the art of excitement because that little piece of information drives the mind crazy. We’ll stay tuned for updates as Netflix continues to prepare for the premiere.
Season 2 of The Mole premieres on Netflix on June 28.
