According to a report from Deadline, Disney has struck a deal with SpyGlass Media Group to greenlight Season 21 for a 10-episode season on Freeform. There’s no set date for the premiere, but they have confirmed that it will be coming sometime next year.

Of course, some of us still call the Freeform network “ABC Family” and only listen to 31 Nights of Halloween. Whatever you want to call it, they were seeking to enter the unwritten space. Their previous attempts this year included a show tracking former expatriates on Grand Cayman and a family show centered around Wayne Brady. Acquiring an established show like Project Runway seems like a wise next phase of their strategy.

“Project Runway is an iconic television show that perfectly complements the pop culture spirit of Freeform,” said Simran Sethi, president of scripted programming, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment.

He continued: “We are excited to welcome the original series to the Disney family and reignite the fan base alongside Spyglass and Alfred Street, giving viewers the opportunity to once again participate in discovering the next generation of exceptionally talented fashion designers.”

This is the second time Project Runway has dropped from Bravo’s programming slate. Bravo debuted the first five seasons and then sold the show to The Weinstein Company. They aired the show for 11 seasons on Lifetime, earning Emmy nominations and evolving into an iconic reality competition show.

In 2018, when Harvey Weinstein was exposed as a sexual predator, the Weinstein Company collapsed and the rights to Project Runway rose to be up for grabs. Later that year at NBCUniversal Upfronts, Andy Cohen walked out on stage and triumphantly announced that the show would be returning home to Bravo.

Project Runway’s return to Bravo also coincided with the exit of Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn from the show. It signaled a new era, and they wrapped things up with an all-star release for Season 20. After that, Bravo quietly canceled the show and the rights went up again.

Stay tuned for more updates on the future of Project Runway now that Disney and Freeform are in control. If history repeats itself, we may be in for another change in the bench.
