Martha’s Vineyard has been a summer retreat for wealthy African Americans since the late 18th century. Massachusetts was one of the first states to abolish slavery, making it a vacation destination for freedmen and their families. The Bravo show not only gave viewers a glimpse into the lives of those vacationing on the Vineyard, but also portrayed the Black professionals’ commitment to building community, wealth, and positive representation.

“It’s always scary to be first at something,” Jordan told OK Magazine. “My friend used to tell me, ‘When you make your own lane, you’re always going to cause a traffic jam,’” and that’s what I felt happened with Summer House. “Martha’s Vineyard.”

“We were working on creating a track, which is very risky,” she added.

In Season 2, Jordan opens up about her journey with alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss. “I had no idea it affected so many people,” the former Playboy Playmate shares.

“I didn’t know that until my inbox started getting flooded with all these messages saying, ‘Thank you so much,’” Jordan adds. “That’s the part that makes it worth it. But there’s that feeling of insecurity…like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve shown it to everyone, and I can’t take it back.’

Jordan revealed her condition in interviews long before Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head at the 2022 Academy Awards. She mocked his wife, actor Will Smith, for delivering “the slap that the world heard” and eventually drew attention to her… Alopecia. Before the incident, Jada had been vocal about the disorder, which affects about 7 million people in the United States

“It didn’t occur to me that this was a black woman saying that,” Jordan says now. “I wonder if anyone else has had the same backlash. For me, it was hard to see that because she deserves the space to deal with that and inspire others because it’s real.”
