Inside the horrific Idaho college murder case

When police arrived at a home in Moscow, Idaho, responding to a call about a roommate who wouldn’t wake up, what they found on Nov. 13, 2022, was a scene straight out of a horror movie.

Two University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in their second-floor bed, and two others met the same fate upstairs.

The deceased were soon identified as Kylie Goncalves21; Madison May21; Zana Kernodle20; and Zana’s friend Ethan Chapin20. The three girls lived there and Ethan spent the night there.

Autopsies concluded that the four deaths were the result of multiple stab wounds. Authorities said some of the victims had defensive wounds, suggesting they had fought for their lives.

Two other roommates, Bethany Funke and Dylan MortensenNo one was hurt. Bethany told police she was sleeping in the basement of the home and did not hear the attacks. Dylan, meanwhile, was on the second floor and told authorities that shortly after 4 a.m. she heard what she believed to be Kaylee playing with her dog upstairs and later saying something that sounded like, “There’s someone here.”
