In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Joanne discussed the difficulty of dating her husband’s anniversary. “My husband died during the coronavirus outbreak and I was not at all accepting of the grief,” Joanne explained. “I had a responsibility to be strong. I was taking responsibility and letting it go.”

I almost felt like I was cheating on John, which is crazy because he died.” Joan said that The Golden Bachelorette’s team of therapists helped her work through her guilt.

Before John passed away, he reportedly told his wife, “I want you to find someone. You’re the greatest wife in the world. I don’t want you to be alone. I want you to find someone.” Joan said she finally “felt comfortable” talking about John with the contestants. “It didn’t feel weird to keep his memory alive,” she explained.

Her openness has allowed potential suitors to discuss their own deceased spouses, too. “It’s opened the door to talking about people who were a really important part of your life,” Joanne added. “I went from not being able to think about it … to now I feel a lot better about it.”
