Gerdi spoke to People magazine about her experience with chemotherapy, explaining how it had a ripple effect on her entire life. Of course, there are the physical side effects, but she also had difficulty dealing with her role as a wife, mother, and business owner.

“I’m a party planner, so I control everything,” Jerdy explained. “My whole life is in order and I control my environment, I control what I do, I control everything about me.”

Gerdy noted that the cancer was so “uncontrollable” that she had no idea how to deal with it. Doctors’ appointments, pills, unexpected physical symptoms — it all had to be managed, Jerdy said.

“Chemotherapy will show you you’re dead in three seconds,” Gerdy admitted. “It’s not a game. For 10 days [after each treatment] I was in bed. The chemical fog is real and I walked like a skeleton, feeling like my bones were about to break.

When Gerdi spent all that time bedridden, she didn’t want her children to see her in a “vulnerable state.” However, they still came to visit her bedroom at home, which Gerdy likened to a “hospital room.” They played charades, watched movies, and tried to make the bedroom look as lively as possible. Sure, that time together was healing in its own way.

These days, now cancer-free, Gerdy is focused on living life to the fullest. She said she devotes as much time as possible to loving her children and spending as much time together as possible. She wants to make up for lost time.

“I’m obsessed with my life right now,” Gerdy said. “I take care of my kids all day, every day. We are closer than ever.”
