After Anna and Ezra were eliminated on Oscar night, co-host Julianne Hough asked Anna what she gained from competing on the show. Anna replied, “Nothing.” Okay, then!

“I knew she was going to say something so iconic and so Anna Delvey-esque as she came out,” Ezra told Extra. “Of course, she had to do it — it’s so typical. We wouldn’t expect anything less from her.” Behind the scenes, however, Anna’s reaction was different. “She just kept apologizing to me,” he explained. “I was so sorry that my first season was cut short.”

But Anna also faced moments when the online backlash was more than she could handle. “Anna is a strong girl, so to see her in this state really shocked me and made me sad,” Ezra said. Ultimately, the newbie pro wished Anna could stay on DWTS longer. “I honestly wanted to stay longer for my partner,” he explained. “I really wanted to give her a chance to really grow in front of the camera and let America see who she really is.”

However, Ezra faced an uphill battle due to Anna’s fame. “I’m not going to lie, I really loved the challenge,” the DWTS pro said. “I don’t want to say it was a challenge, but the complexity of her story and how America views her was a real challenge.”

Meanwhile, Ezra shared what he would like the world to know about Anna. “How sweet she is and how incomprehensible she is… I tried my best to see her for who she really is outside of the character,” he said.

Season 33 of Dancing with the Stars will return with two episodes on Monday, October 7 and Tuesday, October 8 at 8/7c on ABC and Disney+.
