Dive into the hair and makeup secrets of these Olympic artistic swimmers.

Want to learn more about how artistic swimmers keep their hair and makeup looking flawless in the pool?

Good, Daniela Ramirez—who made her Olympic debut at Paris 2024 and won a silver medal with her team—is trying to bring those talents to the surface.

Let’s start with the hair: As Ramirez explained on TikTok, she often styles her hair into a braided bun, securing it with hair ties, bobby pins, and hair nets. To ensure her strands stay shiny and don’t slip, the 22-year-old adds layers of a key ingredient: gelatin.

“It’s used to keep hair in place while swimming, and for purely aesthetic reasons,” Ramirez—who uses either Nuxe or Synchro Lovers gelatin that’s been heated in hot water until it looks like honey—explains in a video. “It’s sticky and dries hard.”

It’s a powerful option (check out Ramirez’s “ASMR Hair” videos to see how powerful it is).

“We can use swimming caps, which is what we do during training, but it seems better to swim this way to fit a certain theme,” the athlete, who finishes her hairstyle with a decorative headpiece, continued.
