The European Football Championship (Euro 2024) starts on June 14 and continues until June 14.

The European Football Cup (Euro 2024) starts on June 14 and continues until July 14 in Germany. Here we review the tournament system and the financial rewards allocated.

Euro 2024 competition system

The competition system will be the same as the previous two editions: group stage, 24 teams will be divided into 4 groups of 6, followed by 4 elimination rounds. Each team will play 3 matches in the first round, facing each team once.

After these matches, the first and second placed teams from each group will advance to the round of 16, while the top four teams will be placed in third place.

When there is a difference in points between at least two teams from the same group, the selection will be decided in the following order.

  • Number of points in direct matches.
  • The difference in goals scored during head-to-head matches and then their number difference.

The qualifiers start with one match and can be extended to two more halves (half time with two halves) and penalty kicks, leading to the final.

Replacements

After the return of football after the “Covid-19” epidemic, each team is allowed to make 5 substitutions per match. In “Knockout” matches, if there is more time, the sixth can be replaced.

UEFA also allows coaches to call up 23 to 26 players, all of whom can be included in the playing list.

Finally, and even shortly before the first match, any player can be freely substituted for a medically proven “serious injury or illness”.

Restrictions

As in other major tournaments, players or officials (including coaches) sent off with a red card will be immediately banned from the next game of the tournament, but in the event of serious infractions, FIFA’s disciplinary body may lift the penalty and extend it to other tournaments. .

As for warnings, players and officials who receive two yellow cards will be suspended for the next match, but their “guidelines” will be reset to zero at the end of the quarter-finals.

Cash prizes

The EU intends to distribute 331 million euros (about $360 million) to the 24 participants as of the 2021 edition.

Each participant will receive 9.25 million euros, which will rise to 28.25 million euros if the winner wins all three games in the first round.
