Barcelona are moving to sack manager Xavi Hernandez weeks after he made a stunning decision.
Barcelona are set to sack manager Xavi Hernandez weeks after his dramatic decision to walk away from the club at the end of the season, Spanish media reported on Friday.
Catalan radio “RAC 1” has decided to dismiss the president of the club Joan Laporta Xavi, the daily newspaper “Sport” confirmed the same news. According to “AS” newspaper, Barcelona have started looking for a new coach.
Xavi announced in January that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season, but after a string of strong performances in April, Laporta agreed to stay until the end of next season as his contract expires in June 2025.
Newly, Laporta did not travel with the team to face Almeria in yesterday’s Liga Blaugrana 2-0 win after he was angered by Xavi’s comments before the game.
Xavi spoke about the financial difficulties facing the club in the face of the strength of its famous rivals and rivals Real Madrid and some of the biggest European clubs.
“Barcelona fans have to understand that we are not in the same situation (as these clubs),” Xavi told Bastia yesterday.
The coach stuck to his words – yesterday – when asked about Laporta’s absence from the Almeria match.
“They didn’t tell me anything personally,” Xavi told reporters late yesterday. “We traveled with the vice president and several managers.”
He continued: “I said what I believe to be true. We will fight for all the titles with a lot of hope and ambition, but the situation is not easy.”
“We are doing very well, and most importantly, we are working to change this situation,” he said.
Barcelona won the league title last season but failed to defend it this season as they were knocked out by France’s Saint Germain in the quarter finals of the Champions League.
In the Spanish Super Cup final, Barcelona suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Real Madrid before being knocked out by Athletic Bilbao.
In April, Xavi (44 years old) was “full of hope” and said that they were among the most important reasons to convince the fans, players and “beyond the faith of the president and sports director Deco” to stay.
Laporta said he was happy to have Xavi stay at the club, “and this is good news for the stability of the team.”
